Last summer, we discovered the best u-pick strawberry field in Carlsbad. It's huge and the strawberries, from what I hear, are really good. It opened not too long ago, so when Matt was off we headed there to let the boys pick. Graham has been requesting to go strawberry picking since we went last June. Lucky for him, the strawberries were finally on. : )
You pay for the bucket, but then it's understood that you can sample the strawberries as you go. I think the boys (including Matt) ate about as many strawberries as we took home.
Since it was early in the season, the strawberry plants were still really beautiful and the strawberries were perfectly red. Last year, it was near the end of the season, and the plants were looking a little haggard, although the strawberries were still good.
